Safety of PHA
Even very sensitive skin types can tolerate PHAs, including atopic and rosacea skin.
It is thought that the gentle, nonirritating action of PHAs may be partially related to
a larger molecular composition than that of conventional AHAs.
Larger molecules are believed to penetrate the skin at a slower rate, causing less irritation.
This reduced irritation, coupled with natural antioxidant properties,
gives PHAs a gentle, competitive edge over other anti-aging treatments.

Polyhydroxy acids are ingredients such as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid.
They’re supposed to be as effective as AHAs, but less sensitizing.

Gluconolactone and lactobionic acid are chemically and functionally similar to AHAs (such as glycolic acid).
The significant difference between them and AHAs is that gluconolactone and lactobionic acid have larger molecular structures,

which limits their ability to penetrate the skin,
resulting in less potential for sensitizing side-effects.

Supposedly, this reduced absorption into the skin does not hamper their effectiveness.
Does that mean gluconolactone and lactobionic acid are better for your skin than AHAs in the form of glycolic acid or lactic acid?
According to an Internet-published class lecture by Dr. Mark G. Rubin, a board-certified dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego, research on gluconolactone demonstrated only a “6% decrease in dermal penetration” in comparison to glycolic acid, which “isn’t a dramatic improvement.”
Gluconolactone may be slightly less sensitizing for some skin types,
but this isn’t the magic bullet for exfoliation some cosmetics companies have been extolling.
Polyhydroxy acids can also function as antioxidants and may promote some amount of improvement in skin’s surface strength
• PHAs have been found to be compatible
with clinically sensitive skin, including rosacea and atopic dermatitis, and
can be used after cosmetic procedures.
•PHAs provide additional humectant and
moisturization properties compared with AHAs and can enhance stratum corneumbarrier function, therefore increasing the skin's resistance to chemical
• Most PHAs also possess antioxidant
• PHAs such as gluconolactone or lactobionic acid
may be used in combination with other products, ingredients, or procedures such
as laser and microdermabrasion to provide additional benefits to therapy or to
enhance the therapeutic effect.
•Several studies were conducted in support
of this, and methods and results are discussed. In summary, PHA-containing
products were used in combination with retinoic acid in treating adult facial
acne and were found to be well tolerated.
•PHAs plus retinylacetate (pro-vitamin A) in a cream base exhibited significant antiaging skin
benefits such as skin smoothing and plumping.
•PHAs plus hydroquinone showed excellent
improvement in antiaging and skin lightening parameters.
• Finally, PHA-containing products were
shown to be compatible with African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic/Asian
skin and provided significant improvements in photoaging in these populations.
